Google Fiber 5 Gig is our fastest internet speed yet. For comparison, 5 Gig has speeds up to 5x faster than Google Fiber 1 Gig (with compatible equipment). It’s currently rolling out in Kansas City, Utah and West Des Moines, and will be expanding throughout 2023.

5 Gig comes with all the features of Google Fiber 2 Gig, only faster. To make the most of 5 Gig speeds (see: uploads and downloads at up to 5,000 Mbps), you’ll need an ethernet connection to equipment capable of going that fast.

We know that you have Wi-Fi devices, too, so 5 Gig comes with the Google Fiber Multi-Gig Router and up to two Mesh Extenders for mesh Wi-Fi 6 coverage. But if you have a need for 5 Gig, you might also have a favorite router, so we’ve made it easy to use your own by plugging it directly into the professionally-installed 10 Gig Fiber Jack.

People are always doing more with their internet. We know that not everyone will have the kind of equipment, file sizes, or number of connections that can make the most of 5 Gig. However, if you’ve got a lot of data to move very quickly, you’ll appreciate having up to 5000 megabits per second in both directions.

Our testers have said lossless video, raw image files, music production including stems, VFX and a whole lot more – but we look forward to hearing what you want to do with that kind of speed.

All of our internet plans are great for online gaming and streaming ultra high-def content. It comes down to how many people and devices are connecting, and how fast the services you’re using are actually sending content.

Some game servers and many streaming services aren’t currently sending data faster than 2 Gig. So we recommend 5 Gig for people who are focused on cutting-edge use cases and gigantic file transfers.

Of course, if you’re streaming 8K at the same time your roommate is collaborating with indie filmmakers around the country realtime in full res files, and your car is grabbing a firmware update – you won’t mind having 5 Gig.

Wi-Fi 6 is a new Wi-Fi standard, with many Wi-Fi 6-ready devices already available in the market. Wi-Fi 6 allows for 30%+ faster speeds on Wi-Fi 6-enabled devices (such as phones, laptops, and tablets), and for more devices on a single network without slowing down Wi-Fi speeds. Wi-Fi 6 also improves battery life and provides greater security with WPA3.

With Google Fiber 2 Gig, customers will receive the Google Fiber Multi-Gig Router and tri-band Mesh Extender. Both support the Wi-Fi 6 standard. A dual-band device has a 2.4 Ghz band and 5 Ghz band, but our tri-band Mesh Extender adds an additional 5 Ghz band for devices to connect to. The tri-band Mesh Extender extends Wi-Fi coverage, connecting to the router and creating a seamless Wi-Fi network that lets you roam throughout your home without having to reconnect or restart your device.

2 Gig will be available in almost all of Google Fiber’s service areas, but there may be some technical limitations that will exclude some customers.

We expect to roll 5 Gig out across the majority of our cities as well, including the new Google Fiber cities we are currently planning and building out.
